GOV. Aris Aumentado and Vice-Governor Dionisio Victor Balite threw support to Ube industry as the province launched the 22nd Ube festival that runs to January 30, 2023 after its unveiling on January 26, 2023. Both officials graced the event.
Gov. Aumentado gave a message of support, expressing his desire for Bohol to be known internationally as a top Ubi grower.
He added that producing more ubi for Bohol is part of the provincial government’s agricultural priorities.
Balite welcomed attendees to the festival’s opening ceremony on January 26 at the old airport and gave a message on the historical significance of the root crop responsible for helping Boholanos throughout the famine.
“I learned how sacred ubi as a crop for Boholanos, Bohol a lot of cultural practices for the crop from planting it at dawn and during midnights, to kissing it when it falls to the ground. Bohol’s Ube is significant to the lives of Boholanos,” Balite said.
Bohol celebrates its 5-day annual Ubi Festival also an event recognizing the contributions of Ubi farmers in the Province.
A yearly celebration since 2000, the Ubi festival opened this year’s celebration with a parade from the New Provincial Capitol up to the Old Airport, where farmers and producers showcase and sell a variety of Ubi products to the public.
From Ubi crops to Ubi-based desserts, the festival aims to promote the significance of ubi as a staple crop for Boholanos and the different delicacies they can produce using it.
The Festival’s activities also showcasing other activities, such as a cook-off, a kuradang contest and Ube produce from 16 municipalities, Tagbilaran City and three private organizations (Bohol purple women, Prycegas, and Destileria Barako).
This year’s theme is “Industriya sa Ubi Palamboon, Katambayayong sa Pag-Abante sa mga Bol-anon.” (PIMO/MAEP)
