TO address the challenges faced by the country’s basic education sector, the Department of Education (DepEd) will launch its Education Agenda before the month ends.
“It’s really to give the public an idea of the steps that this administration will take and also the direction of this administration towards resolving issues in basic education,” said DepEd Spokesperson Michael Poa on Jan. 13.
Poa said that the Education Agenda will be part of the Basic Education Report (BER) 2023 to be presented by Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte on Jan. 30.
“As we all know, we have problems with school facilities, we have problems with our curriculum which we are currently reviewing, we have problems with literacy and the learning poverty as reported by the World Bank,” Poa said in a mix of English and Filipino.
“These are the things that we are aware of and a lot more that we will be presenting in the BER,” Poa said. “These are the issues that we want to address in our Education Agenda,” he added.
Aside from updates on basic education resources such as school buildings and facilities, Poa said that the BER 2023 will also highlight the K to 12 program and support teachers and learners — among others.
Poa said that the BER 2023 will also provide updates on the basic education curriculum. Currently, a review of the Kinder to Grade 10 curriculum has been completed. “There are still consultations that are ongoing but we are at least in the finalization,” he explained.
The review for the Senior High School (SHS) or Grades 11 and 12 started in November 2022. “Right now, the review is ongoing and if there will be additional updates, that would be included in the BER 2023,” he added. (Merlina Hernando-Malipot/ MB)
