PB laments imposition fee seen hindering sports event DISRUPTION FEE?

BM ANCLA

“ARE they (referring to the recent triathlon event) causing the disruption or are we the disruptors?”

Provincial ex-officio Board member Lawrence Xavier Ancla, provincial president of Sangguniang Kabataan (SK), has raised this query following the imposition by Panglao municipal government and collect a portion of registration fees for the so-called “disruption fee.”

“At present, I do not yet see the necessity for such fees, particularly when the benefits of events like the 5150 Triathlon clearly outweigh their inconveniences.”

The lament was expressed in his privilege speech during the session of the provincial board, saying he has witnessed the said “5150 Triathlon hosted by Sun Life, an inspiring event that brought together a remarkable number of participants, many of whom traveled from different parts of the country and even across the globe.”

A source (identity withheld) confirmed the said imposition and collection of said fee pursuant to an Ordinance. But he did not give details.

“Rather than hindering these initiatives, we should be fostering a more enabling environment—one that welcomes partnerships, promotes collaboration, and ultimately uplifts the entire province,” Ancla said.

Sports in tourism industry has proven to be a contribution to growth. “Let’s not contradict its potential, but instead embrace it with policies that support and sustain its momentum.”

He said the importance of the event was a powerful reminder of how private-led initiatives can drive significant progress and positive exposure for the Province of Bohol. It provided a platform for visitors to experience the natural beauty, culture, and hospitality of our province, while simultaneously contributing to the local economy.

The triathlon made some hotels fully booked and benefited restaurants “to active tour and travel accommodations, a single weekend event generated substantial economic activity.”

“As I observed the enthusiasm of the athletes and the buzz of activity across the island, it reaffirmed the immense potential of sports tourism, especially in a province like ours—a UNESCO Global Geopark Regenerative Island and a proud ambassador of tourism. However, I also became aware of some challenges faced by the organizers.” (rvo)
