The honor acknowledges the city’s dedication to sustainable coastal governance and marine conservation, with representatives from supporting international development organizations and project partners in attendance.

THE City Government of Tagbilaran was honored with a Plaque of Recognition by the Fostering Inclusive and Sustainable Habitats (FISH) Visayas Project – Phase II on April 23, 2025, during the FISH Visayas Forum and Networking Night held in Cebu City, as part of the 2025 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week hosted by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

The award acknowledges the city’s outstanding contribution to promoting sustainable fisheries and marine ecosystem management by effectively integrating Blue Economy principles into local governance.

It also affirms the city’s dedication to building a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future for its coastal communities.

The plaque was received on behalf of the city by Ms. Mary Jane Sague of the City Agriculture and Veterinary Office (CAVO), and presented by the German Agency for International Cooperation and Afrika Fonds für Selbständigkeit (AFOS) Foundation for Entrepreneurial Development Cooperation through Mr. Norbert Weiss, FISH Visayas Project Management Adviser and Ms. Yvette Hope Labus, Project Manager and Philippine Resident Foundation.

Through the strong leadership of Mayor Jane Yap and the continued efforts of the City Government, Tagbilaran has emerged as a model for other LGUs across the region in implementing community-based and ecosystem-driven approaches to marine resource management.

The city’s initiatives—guided by science, policy innovation, and participatory governance—have empowered fishing communities, strengthened livelihoods, and upheld the city’s commitment to marine conservation.

“This recognition is not just for the local government, but for every fisher folk, every coastal family, and every fishing community who relies on the sea to live and thrive,” said Mayor Jane Yap. “We owe it to them and to the next generation to protect our marine ecosystems and ensure that the bounties of the sea will reach Tagbilaranons.”

Tagbilaran is one of only four LGUs in Bohol recognized for this achievement, solidifying its place as a leader in inclusive and sustainable coastal development.

The award stands as a testament to the power of collaboration between local leaders, international development partners, and the people they serve.
