Journey with Research Designs (PNU-LiSQuP Scholar Experience)

CONDUCTING research is one of the important factors to be considered in the provision of data-driven programs, projects, and activities to address concerns, issues, gaps, and difficulties. This article discusses some research designs appropriate for the conduct of a chosen researchable problem.

a. Phenomenological Research

Phenomenological research design demands the researcher to exclude anything that prior assumptions they have about the event or experience. To consider it in another way, this kind of study or research design is used to examine the ideas or concepts of persons who have meed or encountered a certain experience of an event to comprehend its societal environment to address certain personalities, events, or significant contributions towards a better society. To examine it as it happens. make observations and make sure the explanation takes the same form as the items. This kind of research approach greatly provides needed information to address issues and concerns that society is facing with. This also requires proper observation in the community and recordings of the observations made.

As the basic assumption underlying this kind of research approach, it is truthful that the real information that is considered data-driven is provided by the respondents who are getting real experiences in their real lives. Experiences shared by the respondents during the data-gathering activity using the focus group discussion on the SBM level of practice in curriculum development and instruction are also relevant in this kind of research approach.

b. Critical Feminist Research

This study focuses on the knowledge generated by women for other women. Various feminist academics have a similar dedication to the job of overtly post-colonial and semi-rewriting knowledge. However, practical concerns like funding and availability of participant access frequently place a cap on the sample size in many qualitative research investigations. In-depth interviews with semi-structured questions are recommended when using a phenomenological approach design, but self-administered interviews with structured open-ended questions can also be employed.

According to some readings, observations, and actual experiences, in the field as a school principal, though gender equality has been given much emphasis and recognition, the rate of dysfunctional families has increased. Problems in society have been felt due to a lack of parental care and guidance, especially from the care of absentee mothers. The love and affection that children need have slowly been diminishing from the picture of a household scenario because both parents are trying to meet the economic demands of the society that they are in. It is just hoped and prayed that society will not forget the real essence of the different endeavors that the parents are striving with.

SBM level of practice, particularly in curriculum development and instruction has something to do with gender issues. It is a fact that in the DepEd Philippines, a great majority of personnel are females, but how about managerial positions? There is a need to conduct a study on this about the specific gender of those occupying specific positions or designations in this field.

c. Narrative

The objective of this type of research study is to identify and understand how human beings understand society, and this could be explained through written activities. Focusing on a thorough explanation of the different understanding of the concepts or ideas people attribute to their daily experiences, researchers in this approach use a small number of participants as samples to produce relevant and related data and free-flow od responses. This study used to determine a sort of narration as an inquiry activity to reveal unique perspectives and a deeper understanding of a situation. Thus, giving an opportunity to less fortunate populations whose perspective is not often heard or solicited. It is believed, that the narrative research approach is the simplest form of data-gathering activity to identify needed data to address certain issues, concerns, and challenges met by the respondents.

SBM level of practice research activity needs to be provided with a lot of stories to tell, based on sharing of the respondents. The organization of ideas is a very vital factor to be considered in this kind of research study

d. Grounded Theory Research

This method known as “grounded theory” (GT) focuses on creating hypotheses that are “premised” on data that has been carefully acquired and analyzed. Its main purpose is to explain social activities and procedures to identify certain or needed data gathered in this study also referred to as group practices and social interactions that tell specific stories that may lead to the achievement of the needed results of the study. Grounded research has been considered research that needs careful investigation

Therefore, this kind of research approach greatly affects data collection techniques and is frequently employed in grounded theory: asking open-ended questions to participants during interviews. Focus groups and/or participant observation, examining documents and artifacts are part of the data-gathering procedure activities. The participatory approach of this study is vital to provide valid, reliable, accurate, and dependable data needed to propose interventions to

problems that need solutions using this kind of research approach.

Identification of the different SBL levels of practice particularly in curriculum development and instruction needs a detailed explanation of events as it undergoes a series of questions to be answered by identified respondents.
