Grand Nutrition Awards is a yearly awarding by the Department of Health thru the National Nutrition Council (NNC) in region-7 for the best performing Local Nutrition Committee in the Barangay, Municipal, City and Provincial Level.
The work of the City Nutrition Council (CNC) is not easy. The process of identifying and gathering targets and encouraging these targets to come to the venue and participate in the Pabasa sa Nutrisyon (PSN) sessions is pure hard work.
The designated Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) of the City Government does regular house to house visit to the constituents of the city and makes it a point to list down pregnant women and lactating mothers during their visitation. These identified targets are invited to attend the nutrition seminar.
It is also during this time that the BNS also checks the weight of the children in every household. Thus, the BNS also has information regarding underweight children. Once the BNS identifies children with weight problems, invitation is automatically extended to the mothers to attend the training sessions on nutrition.
Also, women who attends the pre-natal day in the barangay health stations are invited by the midwives to attend the nutrition sessions/ workshops of the City Health Office. Thus, the recognition accorded to them is indeed well-deserved.
The National Nutrition Council (NNC) was created by Presidential Decree 491 (1974) as the country’s highest policy-making and coordinating body on nutrition. The NNC Governing Board is the collegial body that is chaired by the Secretary of Health. The Board is composed of ten government organizations (DOH, DA, DILG, DepED, DSWD, DTI, DOLE, DOST, DBM and NEDA) represented by their secretaries, and three representatives from the private sector who are appointed by the President for a two-year term with possible reappointment.
