THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has given recognition to the agency’s environmental partners for their valuable contributions to successfully carry out the closure of open dumpsites and to prevent the dumping of waste. Tagbilaran City was one of those champions when the DENR Environmental Management Bureau Region 7 gave an award to the city for Best in Dumpsite Closure and Rehabilitation Implementation.

Corylin Estavillo and Rosalyn Genarin from the Provincial Environmental Management Office personally handed out the plaque to Mayor Jane Yap during the Comprehensive Development Plan workshop at JJs Seafood Village on August 30, 2022.

The DENR has been aggressive in its campaign on solid waste management and in the implementation of the provisions of RA 9003. These include the closure of open dumpsites, establishment of materials recovery facilities (MRF), and provision of assistance to local government units (LGU) for the development of their 10-year solid waste management plans.

The DENR also committed to work hand-in-hand with the LGUs to increase the number of sanitary landfills (SLF) in the country and to review the implementing rules and regulations of RA 9003 to explore the establishment of bigger SLFs. Tagbilaran City also carries the same agenda in its pursuit to systematize its solid waste management. In fact, City Environment and Natural Resources Officer (CENRO) Ceasar Pelaez and Solid Waste Management Office Head (SWMO) Lito Taladua welcomed two new garbage trucks given to the SWMO.  (Jeanette Busano)
