BOHOL, under the leadership of Gov. Aris Aumentado, continues to champion Philippine tarsier conservation with the opening of a new research and tourism facility in Corella, complementing the province’s UNESCO Global Geopark designation.
The Philippine Tarsier Foundation Inc. (PTFI) Tourist Center and Research Center was inaugurated on September 18, 2026, at the PTFI Sanctuary in Corella, bringing together provincial officials, conservation advocates, researchers, and development partners to strengthen protection of the country’s iconic tarsier.
In his welcome remarks, Vice Governor Nick Besas said the new facility marks an important milestone in the shared commitment to protecting the Philippine tarsier and ensuring its continued existence through scientific research, environmental education, public engagement, and data-driven conservation programs.
The facility also supports Bohol’s broader environmental conservation and sustainable tourism efforts, particularly following the province’s designation as a UNESCO Global Geopark, which recognizes the importance of its geological, ecological, and cultural heritage.
British Ambassador to the Philippines Her Excellency Sarah Hulton OBE, who delivered the inspirational message, underscored the importance of investing in science, knowledge, and partnerships to protect one of the Philippines’ most iconic species.
Hulton said research centers provide a foundation for effective conservation by helping stakeholders better understand species and ecosystems, identify threats, measure progress, and develop solutions grounded in science.
She also highlighted the United Kingdom’s commitment to working with partners worldwide in supporting nature conservation and the implementation of global biodiversity commitments.
During the event, Hulton shared with Vice Governor Besas that she had been enjoying her stay in Bohol.
Artist Elvin Perocho Vitor also presented her with a painting of a Philippine tarsier.
Hulton led the ribbon-cutting ceremony, joined by Vice Governor Besas, Provincial Administrator Asteria Caberte, PTFI Chairman Soliman Fonacier, Provincial Tourism Council Co-Chair Atty. Lucas Nunag, and other stakeholders.
The inauguration concluded with a guided tour of the new research center and tarsier viewing area.
Supporting the provincial government’s Strategic Change Agenda, the facility highlighted Bohol’s efforts in strengthening conservation research, environmental education, public engagement, and responsible tourism. (PIMO/JFP)
