health disorder, says retired doctor

TIROL & GARA

A NEWBIE provincial Board Member-elect has said that music can be a therapy in mental health disorder, which is said to be alarming in the province.

Dr. Mutya Tirol told music-talented Joseph Gara in a conversation recently that music could treat those having mental ailment.

She said that music for the mental patient could broaden their perspectives and make them busy as suggested by Gara.

Reports said that here in Bohol some suicide incidents are borne out of mental health issues.

Music therapy is the use of music and/or elements of music (like sound, rhythm and harmony) to accomplish goals, like reducing stress or improving quality of life. It may benefit many different aspects of your well-being, including: mental, emotional, physical, social and cognitive (perspective), research said.

It is a tool to address psychological, emotional, and social needs. It can help individuals reduce stress, manage pain, improve communication, and enhance overall well-being. While not a cure-all, music therapy can be a valuable adjunct to other treatments, offering a unique and enjoyable way to cope with mental health challenges.

“According to a research from Northshore University Health System of Chicago, music stimulates memories that wrap themselves around us; it increases levels of serotonin and endorphins, which in turn elevate mood and relieve depression. Music also reduces blood pressure and lowers the stress chemical cortisol.” (rvo)
