IN 1995, there was a movie entitled “Judge Dredd” with Sylvester Stallone taking the lead role as an indestructible robot cop. I am not really a fan of science fiction movies and I can’t remember why I went to see that movie.
Anyway, in that movie, there was a scene wherein the lead character was making love to his girlfriend. What made that scene memorable to me was the fact that since the movie was supposedly set in the future, they were using ‘technological gears’ to consummate their intimacy. The explanation was that in that future time, the world has become so advanced that it was discovered and concluded that having physical sex was “unsanitary” and “un-healthy.” Thus, the use of high-tech apparatus to fulfill a highly human biological and emotional requirement.
I smirked watching that scene because for me that was extremely improbable. I just thought to myself, “well, I’m just watching a sci-fi movie…it’s never going to happen.”
That thought was several decades ago. Thinking about it now, I am no longer sure if I still think the same way or if I can still say that “it’s never going to happen.”
That’s because technology has gone so far. Advancements and breakthroughs are added every day to the already min-boggling gadgets that exist.
Even in religion and the way we worship God.
We are all aware that religion has long been an integral part of human civilization, providing solace, guidance, and a sense of purpose. But as we move further into the digital age, technology also continues to revolutionize various aspects of our lives.
Unsurprisingly, religion is not immune to the transformative power of technology.
In recent years, advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and other emerging technologies have begun to shape the future of religious practices, beliefs, and experiences.
While I am not a ‘techie,’ I’m beginning to see the profound impact of AI, VR, and other technologies on religion. In this write-up, I try to explore (despite my naivete about high-tech) the potential benefits and challenges they present.
AI and Religion
Artificial intelligence has the potential to significantly impact religious practices and beliefs. AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants are already being used to provide spiritual guidance, answer theological questions, and facilitate religious rituals. These technologies offer accessible platforms for individuals seeking religious guidance, regardless of geographical location or time constraints.
AI algorithms can analyze vast amounts of religious texts, helping to interpret and contextualize scriptures, and even generating new insights and perspectives.
The way I see it though, the introduction of AI in religious contexts have raised ethical questions within me, such as the potential loss of human connection and the risk of bias in algorithmic decision-making.
Virtual Reality and Sacred Experiences
Virtual reality has the ability to transport individuals into immersive digital environments, offering new possibilities for religious experiences.
VR can recreate sacred spaces, allowing individuals to explore holy sites, participate in religious ceremonies, and engage in shared worship, all from the comfort of their homes. This technology can foster a sense of community among believers, transcending geographical boundaries. Additionally, VR can provide opportunities for religious education, enabling people to learn about different faiths and engage in interfaith dialogue.
Nonetheless, the question of whether virtual religious experiences can truly replicate the depth and authenticity of physical encounters remains questionable, at least, for me.
Wearable Technology and Personalized Spirituality
The rise of wearable technology presents unique opportunities for personalized spirituality. Devices such as smartwatches and fitness trackers can integrate spirituality into individuals’ daily lives by offering features like meditation guides, prayer reminders, and mindfulness exercises.
These devices can track biometric data, enabling users to gain insights into their physiological responses during religious practices. By combining technology and spirituality, wearables can facilitate self-reflection, mindfulness, and personal growth.
In my mind, there are concerns over privacy, data security, and the potential commodification of spirituality through commercial wearable applications, I think they need to be addressed.
Social Media and Global Religious Movements
Social media platforms have become powerful tools for religious communities to connect, share beliefs, and mobilize followers on a global scale. Religious leaders and organizations can use social media to disseminate teachings, conduct virtual congregations, and engage with their congregants.
The instantaneous and widespread nature of social media enables the rapid spread of religious ideas, fostering interfaith dialogue and understanding.
My fear is that, the unregulated nature of social media can amplify extremist voices, spread misinformation, and lead to the polarization of religious communities.

As technology continues to evolve, it inevitably influences the future of religion. AI, virtual reality, wearable technology, and social media offer both advantages and challenges to religious practices, beliefs, and experiences.
While these technologies provide new avenues for accessibility, interconnectivity, and personalized spirituality, they also raise questions regarding authenticity, ethics, and the potential erosion of traditional religious practices.
As we navigate this evolving landscape, it is crucial for us to engage in thoughtful dialogue, address ethical concerns, and find ways to leverage technology in a manner that enriches and respects the diverse religious fabric of our societies.
