TO commemorate Victory Day, the Russian Community in the Philippines held the “Immortal Regiment” through a motorcade from Dauis to Tagbilaran City on May 12, 2023.
The motorcade started at Anlio Resort, with participants donning the Russian national flag and St. George ribbons on their clothing as they passed through JA Clarin Street to Plaza Rizal. After the motorcade was a prayer service led by the Secretary of the Russian Orthodox Church’s Philippine-Vietnamese Diocese, Hieromonk Father Cornilius.
Participants, headed by the Economic Counselor of the Russian Embassy Nikolai Ovsiannikov, also visited the National Museum of Bohol for a quick tour of the Pagbanhaw Gallery, an exhibit on the Boholano churches declared as National Cultural Treasures, hosted by the Museum’s OIC Tata Rachelle Lacea.
This event honored the 78th Anniversary of Russia’s victory over then-Nazi Germany during the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) in the Second World War when convicted war criminal Field-Marshal Wilhelm Keitel signed the German Instrument of Surrender on May 8, 1945, signifying the defeat of the Axis powers. The Immortal Regiment, as a massive civil event, is also observed by the Russian people yearly to honor the 27 million Soviet civilian and military casualties lost during World War II. (PiMO/GMC)
