“Agwanta Mam Mayor!”

THE plan to merge Land Bank of the Philippines and the Development Bank of the Philippines is sending tremors down the spine of some employees, notably, those from DBP.

Accordingly, DBP has about 3,600 employees and about 140 branches nationwide.

So what happens after the “merger?”

Accordingly, an estimated 30% of the total number of DBP employees would be retained, the rest, ah, well, they would be deemed redundant. In other words, wa na kinahanglana, pwes, taktakon or kulban og kaldero.

And that translates to 70% of the total 3,600 employees who will become “retired” or yes, jobless.

Accordingly too, only 22 DBP branches will continue to operate while the 118 DBP branches will close down.

Naturally, many DBP employees nationwide are jittery. Daghan na ang nawad-an og gana nga motrabaho, daghan na ang naghuna-huna og “options” after spending their best lives in DBP.

But the availability of “options” depends on many things – talent, age, health, connections.

If you are oozing with talent, then you have an option. Otherwise, you’re done.

If you are “old” already, or past beyond your prime, then the option is just a dream.

If you are not healthy, because you spend more time in bed or in hospital than in the office, then you’re also kaput.

Most of all, if you have “connect” and you know your way around the corridors of power, then you have a chance at clinging to office. Otherwise, better for you to start thinking about private life, how to cope after being “retired.

But this jitters does not apply only to DBP employees, even Land Bank employees are also having butterflies in their stomachs.

Why?

Because they could also be replaced anytime by their more worthy “peers” from DBP. If they have colorful records in office, like their files are adorned by things like insubordination, tardiness, incompetence and other unpleasant work experiences, more so when they commit the first mortal sin at work – they could not stop their mouths from opening, then they are also included in the list of “candidates.”

So right now, it’s guessing time for the DBP and Land Bank employees.

Kinsa kaha ang ma-retain ug kinsa kaha ang matangtang?

And that is not a very happy prospect, especially now that everybody is still recovering from the wreck and damage caused by Odette and of course, COVID.

* * *

Sure, taking up MAs or PhDs and other EQ enhancements is not a joke. Kapoy magtuon, kapoy mag-research, kapoy mag-eskuyla, kapoy maghimo og mga reports, theses or dissertations.

Og labi sa tanan, gastos pod every step of the way. Pasabot, additional gastos ning mga EQ enhancement.

This explains why only a few “select” ones would ever persevere in this “go beyond” mantra.

But being EQ-enhanced is like putting an edge over the others, because one’s personal record is considered a reflection of his/her personality and attitude, anha diha makita kinsa ang kugihan ug ang tapolan.

Natural, kon papilion ka between kugihan and tapolan, ang ang og mopili ka’g tapolan.

Somebody told me a brief story when he applied for work in government. He only learned about this when he was already “on job.”

He was asked how he wrote his application letter, what documents did he attach and who did he cite as his reference, because by the reckoning of his peers, it was as if his application went through a breeze. Meaning, deretso deretso lang, wa gyod moagi og sangit bisan gamay. Shot dayon.

First, he said, he was recruited and he did not apply. Second, when those in the “Personnel” or HR saw his credentials, especially his EQ, the acceptance and processing was automatic.

Ah mao diay nga dali ra kaayo ka milusot, was the exclamation of his inquisitor.

So this is a lesson in life sa mga tapolan ug sa mga nagsalig lang – life is a constant struggle, it’s a jungle out there, nothing is promised, and only those who are prepared will survive the lean months.

Meanwhile, a friend is worried.

Unsaon kaha nako ning akong igsoon, mora’g busy na man sa pagpangandam.

Unsay gipangandaman?

Unsa may problema ana nga iya man pod nang katungod, was the reply.

Aw oo god, katungod na niya. Ang problema kay way kwarta o tinigom ning tawhana, nalukop na man gani og pangutang ron, bisan kinsa na lay hangyoon og pautang. Kon ingon ani ang iyang sitwasyon, unsa man kaha ang iyang gastoon kon modayon gyod ni siya sa iyang plano, was the retort.

Aw duna seguro gisaligan, was the reply.

A mayor was observed recently in one of the malls of the city.

She was alone, no bodyguards even. She was just by her lonesome self.

One noticeable thing about her – she’s deeply stressed.

And this is evident on her face, she is not her usual cheerful self, the mirth and glow in her eyes are gone. And the whites in her hair are multiplying very rapidly.

Ngano man?
