Soaring High In Times of Challenges

Ubay Central Elementary School (UCES), part of the Ubay I District, has been in existence for more than a century. The school produced a lot of successful individuals, one of whom is Atty. Erico Boyles Aumentado, former Governor of Bohol Gov. EBA is the father of Bohol’s provincial governor, elected last May 9, 2022. Governor Erico Aristotle Cabagnot Aumentado, also known in Bohol as Aris. UCES has a lot of alumni who have excelled in their chosen fields.

Many years ago, the graduates of UCES got their secondary education from private schools in the municipality and in some of the national high schools that are more than five kilometers from the town proper. There were difficulties in their travel and, oftentimes, walking from their residences to the schools that offered secondary education. Then, fortunately, the different stakeholders in the municipality came up with the idea of offering secondary education located at Ubay Central Elementary School, since there are still vacant lots in the said elementary school.

On June 21, 2017, the school, EBAHS, got its permit from DepEd Region VII to start its secondary education offering for grade seven classes. Amidst the minimal resources, such as human, material, and financial, the school was able to provide basic, quality, and accessible secondary education to curricular activities, such as academic competitions, scouting, and sports. Oftentimes, the learners bring home the bacon. This brings honor and fame to the school, as well as the community.

It is sad to note that on March 16, 2020, an Executive Order was released that there will be a lockdown for the entire country. The school’s operations were badly affected. Modular instruction was offered that entails a lot of financial considerations in the production of learners’ activity sheets (LAS). It was one of the experiences that almost caused financial problems for the entire school community. The school head tried to approach groups and individual friends for additional expenses needed for the learners’ welfare.

Another devastating experience that the school experienced was Typhoon Odette, which happened on December 16, 2021. EBAHS was also greatly affected by that typhoon. The buildings were destroyed, including learning resources, and school supplies and equipment. The newly opened school needs to start again. The teaching force, parents, and school management tried to connect with stakeholders who could extend support and services to make the school a learning environment dreamt of by the clientele.

For years, EBAHS teachers, learners, school administration, staff, and parents worked hard to survive. Concerns, issues, and difficulties were raised during PTA and community meetings attended by the school representative. Luckily, all the difficulties encountered were responded to with the support of the local government unit and those who had the heart to extend assistance with the school’s operation, aside from the school maintenance and other operating expenses (MOOE).
