REELECTED Third District Congresswoman Alexie Tutor has favored to move the election of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) to sometime next year (2023) instead of 2024.
Under the existing law, the barangay and SK elections is set on December 5, 2022.
This came as some of the incoming lawmakers in Congress (House of Representatives and the Senate) have already talked about tinkering the said law for the aforesaid polls.
In fact, there are already bills filed for the purpose, but these bills have not been tackled yet by the present Congress, Tutor said.
Probably, Tutor said, these will be considered when the lawmakers assume office and after the oath-taking of President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos on June 30, 2022 at the National Museum.
For some barangay chairmen, it is but okay to postpone it but for many it is better, apparently for their term is extended if it happens, according to an observer.
Tutor’s proposal to move the said elections to next year, though no definite date, yet, is due to expense concerns, saying the local and national elections have just been concluded.
The year 2023 is just right and the said barangay and SK elections should not be held on 2024 since this is also another preparation for the 2025 local or midterm elections, she said in media interview.
It will be recalled that Davao Oriental Rep. Joel Almario filed on November 2021 House Bill No. 10425, postponing the Barangay and SK elections slated in December 2022 to May 2024.
The barangay and SK elections scheduled sometime in October 2013 was moved to November of the same year after the earthquake struck Bohol on October 15, 2013. After that, the next elections were held on May 2018.
The elections of the barangay and SK were supposed to be held in May 2020 but it was moved to December this year by virtue of Republic Act No. 11462 signed by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte. (rvo)
