Earth: Our Home, Our Responsibility

TYPHOONS. Earthquakes. Floods. Landslides. Global Climate Change. Are all of these familiar to you? These are what we are all experiencing nowadays. It is because we humans are no anymore taking good care of the environment. We are no anymore doing what we are supposed to do with the environment. We are already destroying the environment. Thus, global climate change is taking place right now.

United Nations (UN) defines global climate change as long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts may be natural, but since the 1800s, they have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to burning fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas, which produce heat-trapping gases.

Climate change is a change in the usual weather found in a place. This could change how much rain a place usually gets in a year. Or it could be a change in a place’s usual temperature for a month or season. It is also a change in Earth’s climate. This could be a change in Earth’s average temperature. Or it could be a change in where rain and snow usually fall on Earth (according to NASA).

As a result, there are more frequent and intense droughts, storms, heatwaves, rising sea levels, melting glaciers, and warming oceans that can directly harm animals, destroy the places they live, and wreak havoc on people’s livelihoods and communities. As climate change worsens, dangerous weather events become more frequent or severe.

Indeed, global climate change has brought several changes already on planet Earth. It is now boiling on Earth, especially during summer days. During rainy days, it rains so hard. When there is a typhoon, the typhoon is powerful and very destructive. Sometimes, there will be rain that is so very intense during summer, which is not expected to happen since it is the summer season in our country. These are unusual things to happen, and that is because of global climate change.

There is a change already in Earth’s climate. The temperature rises to the highest level, which results in intense drought. The glaciers are melting, resulting in the rise of sea level. The rainy season is low and results in floods and landslides, which are very destructive. There is also ocean warming and ocean acidification because of climate change. These are also damaging marine life and also affecting human life. In other words, climate change stresses our ecosystem and humans. Climate change brings different ill-effects to one and all. There are now hefty rain, boiling temperatures, strong typhoons, floods, landslides, and others that are destructive to the environment and humanity.

All of these are happening because we are no anymore taking good care of the environment. Humans are no anymore correctly disposing of their trash. Others are burning plastics, throwing garbage anywhere, cutting trees, converting forested areas into residential or industrial zones, burning fossil fuels, etc. These human activities are causing the global climate to change. And because of the change in the worldwide environment causes different destructive or deadly disasters or phenomena to occur. We, humans, are destroying the background now. As a result, we are currently experiencing various calamities or disasters that are deadly or claiming the lives of some people.

It is not too late for us to make a difference. We can still do something for the environment and planet Earth. We should stop doing anything that can destroy the environment. Anything that can damage our world and environment must not be done for our safety and survival. We must plant more trees instead of cutting trees. We should not dispose of our garbage anywhere. Instead, we must dispose of waste properly. We should not use different chemicals or fuels that can harm our planet. Instead, we must use the natural ones which are not harmful to the environment. These are just simple acts but significantly impact the environment or our planet. If we are doing all of these, for sure, planet Earth will be happy and very thankful to all of us since we are taking good care of her. Let us do everything that can make planet Earth happy since if planet Earth is in good condition and we are only doing good things for her, we will be safe and enjoying our stay here on Earth.

Let us all engrave in our respective hearts and minds to always do something good to our environment and planet. Let us all participate in different organizations to preserve the environment and take good care of planet Earth. Let us not abuse and destroy the environment and planet Earth in general. Instead, we must love and take good care of planet Earth since planet Earth is our home and our responsibility.
