No to fees in sports events — SK prexy

BM ANCLA

PROVINCIAL ex-officio Board member Lawrence Xavier Ancla, provincial president of Sangguniang Kabataan (SK), is firm in his stance that there should be no charges, or whatever fees, imposed on a sports event in the province.

Ancla tried to coax after Panglao lawmakers do away with the ‘disruption fee’ imposition and change it to ‘environmental fee.’ It was not clear whether the ‘environmental fee’ is similar or different from the town’s “environmental users fee” (EUF) imposed to and collected from divers, snorkelers. The EUF earned over Php100 million last year.

And the so-called fee for organizers of sports events has been retained in the municipal ordinance of Panglao.

In an interview, Ancla said that Bohol could emulate other countries, like France and even in New York that imposes no fees on sports-related events.

“At present, I do not yet see the necessity for such fees, particularly when the benefits of events like the 5150 Triathlon clearly outweigh their inconveniences.”

The youth representative to the SP reacted to the “disruption fee” imposed in Panglao in his privilege speech during the session of the provincial board recently after the recent 5150 Triathlon hosted by Sun Life in Panglao town. He said the event is an inspiring one that brought together a remarkable number of participants, many of whom traveled from different parts of the country and even across the globe.

Sports in tourism industry has proven to be a contribution to growth. “Let’s not contradict its potential, but instead embrace it with policies that support and sustain its momentum.”

He said the importance of the event was a powerful reminder of how private-led initiatives can drive significant progress and positive exposure for the Province of Bohol. It provided a platform for visitors to experience the natural beauty, culture, and hospitality of our province, while simultaneously contributing to the local economy.

The triathlon made some hotels fully booked and benefited restaurants “to active tour and travel accommodations, a single weekend event generated substantial economic activity.” (rvo)
