“WE’RE prioritizing local hiring, creating substantial employment from construction to operation.”
In his short speech, SM Supermall president Steven Tan told the audience of this during the groundbreaking ceremony of the SM Bohol in barangay Cogon, Tagbilaran City, February 27, 2025.
From 60% to 80% Boholanos are being promised to be employed, Tagbilaran City Mayor Jane Cajes-Yap quoted Tan as saying in her speech. “SM is not just a mall. It is a symbol of opportunity, a symbol of economic growth, job creation, and a better future for every Boholano,” she said.
Aside from Tan, SM Prime Holdings, Inc. Vice President Jessica Sy, SMPHI Vice President Marissa Fernan, SM Supermalls Vice President for Operations Junias Eusebio, Vice President for Operations- Visayas Michelle Llanos, and other key SM officials witnessed the groundbreaking.
“Boholanos for a new private development project that will meet their growing needs for shopping, dining, and opportunities,” adding that the groundbreaking is the realization of the dreamt SM Bohol, Gov. Aris Aumentado, who led provincial officials to the ceremony, said.
Tan said the project was delayed for the change of plans, like, what was eyed for two level to three level building in 20,000 sq.m. lot out of 60,000sq.m. SM property.
Tan explained that the building would not be the usual box type, but something the people have not seen before for “world class” for shopping, dining and entertainment destination.
“It will highlight Bohol’s unique cultural identity, blending seamlessly with the local landscape and community. This 60,000-square-meter development is a foundation for growth, but crucially, a sustainable one. We’re incorporating eco-friendly features – natural lighting, water conservation, and green spaces – to minimize our footprint, he said. (Ric Obedencio)
