BOHOL on Tuesday marked the 11th anniversary of the 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Bohol Island and the entire Visayas region, causing over P2 billion in damages to buildings, infrastructure, and properties, and resulting in more than 200 deaths.
At 8:12 a.m., the moment the earthquake hit, bells rang, and in the capital the sirens came to halt for 33 seconds.
In his Memorandum Circular No. 2024-0037, Bohol Gov. Aris Aumentado asked the people to offer prayers for those who perished during the tremor.
The governor added that the event reminded everyone to glorify Him and love our neighbors.
“Hinaot unta, nga kini, magpahinumdum kanato unsa ka bililhon ang gipiyal sa Ginoo nganhi kanato nga higayon, ug angay lang, nga gamiton nato kini sa pagpasidungog Kaniya, paghigugma sa atong isig katawo ug pag-alagad nga matinud-anon bisan unsa pa man ang atong destinasyon,” he added.
1st district Rep. Edgar Chatto, who was governor then when the quake struck the province, thanked those who have worked so hard for Bohol to achieve full recovery.
”Most of all, we are grateful to God for giving us strength to carry on in rebuilding our lives,” he said.
Bishop Abet Uy of the Diocese of Tagbilaran said that the 7.2 magnitude earthquake tested the faith and resilience of the Boholanos.
“Let us remember that through the darkest of times, the light of hope and solidarity shines ever brighter. The strength and unity of our community have shown the world the unwavering spirit of Boholanos,” he said.
He added, “In our shared faith, we find solace and strength. May God’s grace continue to guide us as we rise from the ashes and build a stronger, more resilient Bohol. Together, we are a testament to the power of faith, hope, and love.”
