THE City Government of Tagbilaran, through the Tagbilaran City Primary Care Facility, conducted a lecture on July 26, 2024, at Jj’s Seafood Village to mark Diabetes Awareness Week, a key highlight of the Nutrition Month Celebration.
The event began with a warm welcome from City Health Officer Dr. Jeia Pondoc, who emphasized the importance of community involvement in health initiatives and set a positive tone for the day’s activities.
In partnership with Diabetes Philippines-Bohol Chapter, the program featured specialized lectures from leading experts.
Dr. John Paul Sepe, a Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Specialist, offered valuable insights on “Exercise for Persons with Diabetes”.
His session focused on the critical role of physical activity in managing diabetes, providing practical guidance on exercise routines tailored for individuals with diabetes.
Dr. Marsha Tolentino, the National President of Diabetes Philippines, addressed the topic of “Diabetes-Specific Formula and Nutrition in Diabetes”.
She elaborated on the significance of proper nutrition in diabetes management, discussing how specific dietary choices and specialized nutritional formulas can support better glycemic control.
The final speaker, Dr. Lalaine Delos Santos, discussed “Sugar Substitutes”. She provided insights into the different types of sugar substitutes available, their health impacts, and how to integrate them into a balanced diet for diabetes management.
In addition to the educational sessions, the event showcased young, talented artists from the 15 barangays in an “On-the-Spot Poster Making Contest”, celebrating creativity and engagement with health and nutrition themes.
Prizes for the event included basketfuls of vegetables and bags of rice, a departure from the usual prizes. This choice not only added a unique touch to the celebration but also promoted healthy food choices and aligned with the event’s focus on nutrition.
Mayor Jane Yap reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to nutrition as a priority health program. “Our fight against diabetes is a testament to our dedication to enhancing public health. Nutrition and wellness are at the forefront of our efforts to ensure a healthier community,” said Mayor Yap.
She also expressed gratitude to the participants and organizers, highlighting their crucial role in fostering awareness and promoting healthier lifestyles.
