THE City Government of Tagbilaran spearheaded the kick off activities of the 50th Nutrition Month celebration on July 5, 2024, at the Saulog Gym, focusing on high-risk pregnant women as part of the “Buntis Alagaan, Bata Ampingan” program.
Mayor Jane Yap, the guest speaker, addressed the theme of this year’s celebration, “Sama-sama sa Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) sa nutrisyong sapat para sa lahat.” She highlighted her administration’s program, “Serbisyong from womb to tomb,” which aligns with the PPAN’s goals of ensuring adequate nutrition for all.
In her speech, Mayor Yap emphasized the importance of collective effort in achieving nutrition goals, saying, “Our mission is to ensure that every mother and child receives the necessary nutrition and care from the very beginning. This is a commitment we take seriously, and with the support of our community, we can make a significant impact on the health and well-being of our future generations.”
City Health Officer and Nutrition Action Officer Dr. Jeia Pondoc introduced the “First 1000 Days” program, emphasizing the critical measures during pregnancy and delivery.
The Tagbilaran City Birthing and Baby Care Facility was also showcased for its cleanliness, well-trained midwives, and 24/7 on-call OB/Gynecologist.
Nutrition Assistant Ms. Joan Ganub, RND, provided an informative session on the importance of proper nutrition from pregnancy to lactation.
Additionally, Barangay Nutrition Scholar Rosanna Dulay Mission presented her entry for the Tagbilaran City NutriBalak poem contest by the National Nutrition Council 7, contributing to the ongoing advocacy efforts.
A key highlight of the event was the distribution of milk to pregnant women by Mayor Yap and Dr. Pondoc, with the support of the Barangay Nutrition Scholars from the city’s 15 barangays, alongside Ms. Ytess Verano, the nutrition office secretary.
Participants who were high-risk pregnant women each received three boxes of milk specially formulated for pregnant and lactating women, in addition to free meals provided to all attendees, ensuring both immediate and sustained nutritional support.
