THE City Government of Tagbilaran commemorated International AIDS Candlelight Memorial Day on May 17, 2024, with a meaningful celebration held at the City Hall Atrium.
This event was spearheaded by the Tagbilaran City Primary Care Facility under the leadership of City Health Officer Dr. Jeia Pondoc.
The program included various activities aimed at raising awareness and providing support to those affected by HIV/AIDS. Simultaneous HIV testing and counseling were conducted at the City Hall breastfeeding room to encourage residents to know their status and receive the necessary guidance and support.
Key topics were discussed during the event, starting with an informative lecture on “HIV 101” by Milagros Israel, the Provincial HIV and AIDS Program Coordinator. This was followed by a presentation on the “Philippine HIV and AIDS Law” by Ellyn Ungab, the City HIV and AIDS Program Coordinator, highlighting the legal aspects and protections for individuals living with HIV.
The solemn AIDS Candlelight Memorial ceremony featured a prayer led by Robin Culpa, followed by the lighting of candles and the singing of “One Little Candle,” led by Paulo Antonio Sarabia.
This poignant moment served as a tribute to those who have lost their lives to AIDS and as a symbol of hope for a future free of the disease.
City Mayor Jane Yap, in her message, emphasized the city’s commitment to supporting those affected by HIV/AIDS and promoting awareness and education to prevent the spread of the virus.
She also expressed her gratitude to all the organizers, participants, and health workers for their dedication to this important cause.
The event underscored the City Government of Tagbilaran’s ongoing efforts to address HIV/AIDS through education, support, and advocacy.
