United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Its Relevance to Basic Education Curriculum

THE 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will transform and set a vision for a world that is free from poverty, hunger and disease are listed as the following: No Poverty; Zero Hunger; Good Health and Well-Being; Quality Education; Gender Equality; Clean Water and Sanitation; Affordable and Clean Energy; Decent Work and Economic Growth; Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; Reduced Inequality;  Sustainable Cities and Communities; Responsible Consumption and Production; Climate Action; Life Below Water; Life On Land; Peace and Justice Strong Institutions; Partnerships to Achieve the Goal. These goals from the United Nations are currently being focused on the Philippines (https://www.unorg>development).

From my perspectives, all seventeen UN SDGs are relevant to the basic education curriculum. The two divisions in the schools’ operationalization, curriculum implementations division (CID) and school governance and operations division (SGOD) addressed all concerns in this regard. Take into consideration that the subject offering will provide basic concepts in the development of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values that are geared towards the realization of these goals. For example, Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP) subject addresses Zero Hunger; Good Health and Well-being; Clean Water and Sanitation; Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; Responsible Consumption and Production. In Araling Panlipunan (AP) subject, this will surely address No Poverty; Gender Equality; Sustainable Cities and Communities; Partnerships to achieve the Goal; Decent Work and Economic Growth; Peace and Justice Strong Institutions; Reduced Inequality; Affordable and Clean Energy.  The Science subject to address Climate Action; Life Below Water; and Life on Land.

Goal 4 or Quality Education is the ultimate goal in the operationalization of the basic education curriculum. Given all the contents and competencies in the different learning areas, these seventeen UN SDGs will be properly addressed.

The support of the CID which is SGOD has lots of relevance in the realization of these SDGs. Relevant programs, projects, and activities are offered and developed from schools to the top management to address concerns, issues, gaps, and difficulties. Innovations and research were provided to identify these concerns.

There is a need to strengthen sports, scouting, and institutionalizing sponsorship activities. Sports activities will truly develop one’s ability to face challenges in life but also habits, abilities, capabilities, attitudes, values and the true spirit of taking care of oneself or others. Teaching profession is not an easy task and that is why the importance of being in a team, collaboration, cooperation, and coordination will also be given emphasis. Any opportunity and support will make ones’ life easier.

Scouting activities will enable learners to take part in real-life experiences. Scouting concepts will provide activities, programs, and projects that will help learners to become more productive and responsible individuals, aside from becoming competent and talented individuals. It is also believed that exposing learners to the importance of helping one another will give them the ability to do the same when they will become professionals someday.
