Tagbilaran City contingent tops Sandugo street dancing contest

THE Tagbilaran city contingent represented by barangay Tiptip dancers who won the city’s Saulog festival in May pocketed P500,000.00 as the champion in this year’s edition of Sandugo street dancing competition, after a three-year break due to the pandemic.

Tribung Tagbilaranon also harvested most of the awards: Best in street dancing with P100,000; Best in Musicality, P50,000 and Best in Costume, P50,000.

Banay Loaynon of Loay town took home the P300,000 as prize for the second place and Tribu Carmenanon, P150,000 as third placer.

Catigbian town contingent was unable to defend its title as the champion in Sandugo 2019 for they did not participate this year, report said.

The most coveted ‘mardi gras’ of all in Bohol, the Sandugo Street Dancing took center stage with the parade from Plaza Rizal down to President Carlos P. Garcia sports complex last July 30, 2023.

The street revelry is the auspices of the Provincial Government of Bohol led by Governor Aris Aumentado through the Center for Culture and Arts Development (CCAD).

The participating contingents were the towns of Pilar thru its dancers Tribu Pilarnon; Talibon thru Tribu Islahanong Talibongnon; Guindulman’s Tribu Guindulmanon; Calape’s Tribu Calapenhon; Getafe’s Tribu Ambacon; Buenavista’s Tribu Pangpanganon; and Tubigon’s Tribu Anyag.

The street parade included the beauties who won the Miss Bohol 2023 and Pauline Cucharo Amelinckx, Miss Supranational first runner-up, the Queen of Bohol and the Rajahs of Bohol winners.

The celebration of the Sandugo this year is not without the reenactment of the famous blood compact instigated by then Datu Sikatuna and Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legaspi. The Bohol blood compact was reportedly then the impetus of the United Nations.

Gov. Aumentado reportedly said that the Sandugo celebration is highlighting Bohol’s rich history and vibrant culture that prompted the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to name Bohol as Global Geopark in May this year. (rvo)
