SM taps Tagbilaran City for eco-bags provision

SPARK Philippines Executive Director Maica Teves with City Mayor Jane Yap finalizing the discussions about partnership.

CITY Mayor Jane Yap proudly announced in one of the local chief executive’s posts that Tagbilaran City was chosen by SPARK Philippines to be one of its partners. Three cities were chosen for the project, Quezon City, Taguig City, and Tagbilaran City.

Tagbilaran is the only city outside Metro Manila and the only one in the entire Central Visayas.

In an effort to upcycle tarpaulins, renowned designer Zarah Juan, together with women’s empowerment NGO SPARK Philippines Maica Teves, partnered with the Tagbilaran City Women’s Association Garments Manufacturing Center to cut and sew these innovative eco-bags bags. The target is to produce about 20,000 pieces. The designer bags will be sold in SM Department Stores starting September 16. It’s amazing how our used tarps are upcycled into quality designer tote bags by Zarah Juan.

This project is also in partnership with Pilipinas Shell who vowed to provide our women with the necessary support by donating all their used tarpaulins to the upcycling livelihood center. With this initiative, Mayor Jane Yap is asking the help and support of city partners and establishments to donate used tarpaulins. Local business establishments were also encouraged to display and sell the unique tarp bags in the future.

The project aims to reduce and collect used tarpaulins, convert them into tote bags by engaging sewing communities; thus, adding to their livelihood. The launch will be on September 16, 2022 at SM North Edsa.
