MAYOR Roman Bullen of Dauis town vowed to pursue what he called “Green Farming,” equivalent to Green Revolution of then President Ferdinand Marcos.
This he issued to rally behind the call of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. for food adequacy in media interview.
Bullen said that he personally attended the Farmers’ and Fishermen’s forum organized by the provincial government thru the effort of Provincial Agriculturist Office now led by assistant provincial agriculturist Larry Pamugas to get first-hand information on farming.
The forum held at the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) covered court in the city was graced by Vice-Gov. Victor Balite and Gov. Aris Aumentado, who answered some queries of the farmers and fishermen’s concerns.
He noted that a lot of land in Dauis town, which may be utilized for farming, had been converted into commercial and residential purposes.
Dauis town, part of the Panglao island, has also become a tourist haven where numerous resorts are mushrooming here, apparently to cater the tourist’s accommodation needs.
“We will do green farming,” the mayors said, adding that his administration has already allotted some P5 million to construct green houses to grow vegetables and other crops.
By growing vegetables and crops is a step to help bring down prices of these commodities.
Bullen also batted for reducing the skyrocketing prices of fish, saying it should be regulated so the people can afford to buy fish at reasonable prices.
The move may also help the tourists to come back because when they experienced high prices of food stuff here they may not come again.
Bullen also is looking for a “win-win” solution to the perennial problem fishermen being caught just because they’re encroached the fishing areas.
He said that fishermen of his town are being caught for encroaching in seawater of neighboring towns.
He said he would meet with mayors of Panglao, Baclayon, Tagbilaran city, Maribojoc and other towns to discuss the possibility of letting each other’s fishers to fish in their respective seawater. (rvo)
