TAGBILARAN Diocese of the Roman Catholic church has now a new bishop.
His Holiness Pope Leo XIV appointed Rev. Fr. Gerardo F. Saco Jr. as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Tagbilaran vice Bishop Alberto “Abet” Uy, who was designated as Archbishop of Cebu.
In his short speech before the priests and the lay people, Saco said he accepted the appointment, not because he wanted it but because God calls him to serve to continue his mission.
Bishop Saco said that his Episcopal Ordination and Installation will be held on Mayo 26, 2026 (Martes), 9:00 in the morning at St. Joseph Cathedral of this city.
Leading the said ordination of Bishop Saco would be, Most Rev. Charles John Brown, Apostolic Nuncio, along with Principal consecrator: Most Rev. Alberto “Abet” S. Uy; Co-consecrators: Most Rev. Crispin “Bai” Varquez, Bishop of Borongan, Samar; and Most Rev. Socrates “Soc” Mesiona, Bishop of Puerto Princesa.
Bishop Saco invited the religious community and the people of God to join his historic ordination as bishop.
According to Diocese of Tagbilaran Facebook account, Fr. Saco, who currently serves as Diocesan Administrator, becomes the 8th Bishop of Tagbilaran.
His appointment underscores continuity in leadership, as he has guided the diocese during the period of sede vacante. Widely regarded for his pastoral zeal, humility, and sound administrative leadership, Fr. Saco has earned the trust and respect of clergy, religious, and lay faithful throughout the Diocese of Tagbilaran.
The timing of the announcement on the Solemnity of the Annunciation carries deep spiritual significance, highlighting themes of vocation, obedience, and openness to God’s will – virtues essential to episcopal ministry as a successor of the Apostles.
The Diocese of Tagbilaran now looks forward with renewed hope as it prepares to welcome its new shepherd.
Further details regarding Bishop-elect Saco’s episcopal ordination and installation are expected to be announced in the coming days.
As the Church rejoices in this development, the faithful are encouraged to pray for Bishop-elect Saco – that, like the Blessed Virgin Mary, he may respond generously to God’s call and faithfully shepherd the flock entrusted to his care. (RVO)
