THE public uproar over the reclamation project proposed by a private entity that is feared to adversely affect at least five coastal barangays in Tagbilaran City is mounting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This developed as the City Council thru the urban planning committee is holding a public consultation over the said project to be held a JJs Seafood Village Resto on Monday (Nov. 20, 2023) from morning to afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First to express its opposition is the Diocese of Tagbilaran thru the pastoral letter issued recently by Bishop Albert Uy, who blew the whistle when the centuries-old acacia trees at barangay Taloto were mercilessly cut down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident (acacia cutting) prompted the city government to suspend the business permit of a private firm to set up a gasoline station in said place where the acacia trees were eliminated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAng reclamation projects nagdala og daghang mga hulga batok sa kinaiyahan ug sa mga katilingban nga nagpuyo sa atong mga lapyahan. Mosamot unya kanihit ang isda, kinhason, ug uban pang pagkaon nga bisan karon panagsa na lang nato matilawan,\u201d the pastoral letter pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(The reclamation project has threatened the nature and the community living nearby the coastal areas. The project would cause the destruction of habitat and ecosystem of organisms in the seawater and aquatic species. The result may end up more scarce supply of fish, seashells and other seafoods).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bBut the said pastoral letter did not only explain what would probably happen when there\u2019s the reclamation off the narrow strait dividing the city and Panglao island, it also suggested to let scientific study be conducted by higher learning institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSa ngalan sa paglaban sa kinaiyahan, dako kaayo og ikatabang ang scientific research<\/em> dinhi mismo sa ato nga mahimong ipahigayon sa atong mga higher institutes of learning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKita nanawagan sa mga eskwelahan sa dakbayan ug lalawigan nga adunay kapasidad alang niini sa paghimo og makuti nga pagtuon aron atong mahibaw-an ang konkreto nga damyos kung ugaling i-reclaim ang atong mga lapyahan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(We called on institutions which have the capacity to conduct such research or study to come in so that we\u2019ll know the concrete damage, if any, caused by the said project.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200b\u201cUban niining pagpadayag sa atong baruganan, ania ang atong mga sugyot alang sa hiniusa ug makahuluganon nga pagsaulog sa umaabot nga Season of Creation<\/em>. Ubos sa pagpanguna sa mga kaparian, akong gidasig ang mga parokya ug ang lain-laing mandated religious organizations, apil ang mga Catholic associations<\/em> ug ecclesial communities<\/em> sa paghimo niiining mosunod nga mga kalihokan: \u200bMagpadayon kita sa pagpaningkamot nga atong maampingan ug mapalambo ang kinaiyahaan. Niining paagiha mahimaya ang Diyos nga Magmumugna sa tanang butang, ug modagayday ang hustisya ug kalinaw sa atong yuta.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(The Bishop urged the faithful, the Catholic associations and ecclesiastical communities to continue to take care of the environment and develop it. Thru this way the Lord, the Creator of all things and provide us the peace and justice in our land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walay naghupot og eksklusibo nga katungod sa paggamit sa kinaiyahan nga usa ka gasa sa Diyos alang sa tanan. Dili makiangayon nga ang pipila ka kumpaniya o pamilya lamang ang mabulahan samtang ang uban mag-antos sa malangkubong epekto sa pagkaguba sa kalibutan nga pinuy-anan sa tanan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(The call for action is in consonance of the Season of Creation. The destruction and abuse is a form of injustice since this deprives the people of what is supposed to be shared by everyone. No one is exclusively owns or use of the nature that a gift of God. This is for all. It is also an injustice that a certain only a company or a family which might be benefited while others suffer when the adverse effects of the destruction of the nature.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are some of the important comments as posted by this writer in his FB account for 72 hours. It received only a handful that favor the reclamation. But their identities are kept under wraps, for now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHugot nga DILI\u2026Ric Obedencio Massive reclamation along a natural waterway like the Strait of Tagbilaran is intrusive development that could compromise our natural marine resources, clog up a once free-flowing sea passage, devalue the historical integrity of Tagbilaran (site of the ancient Dapitan Kingdom) and change the weather pattern of the town we love and which we have received from our ancestors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes. For development. Kun nasubraan ra ang imong pagka environmentalist, you are anti-development. Dili ka gusto nga adunay daghan nga mga job opportunities nga mahitabo aron mobentaha ang kahimtang sa katawhan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes, bcuz I am always for development, economic advancement & job opportunities. Reclamation Project has lots of positive & negative impacts but I go for positive!\u201d another said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn every development naa jd masakripisyo, pero it should unta a beneficial to many not for a handful few, no little businesses for lowly people who depend their livelihood nga ma displaced…. development is a must but it should be for the masses unta.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
