Short Cuts\u2019<\/em> young life was never all sorrows. It was, however, intermittently followed with a \u2018bed of roses\u2019,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was during Short Cuts\u2019 <\/em>second year studies in the College of Liberal Arts at then Rafael Palma College when the first green light appeared in his educational journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was offered to work in the editorial office of the Bohol Chronicle!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

No less than the publisher and editor-in-chief of the then weekly newspaper called and offered him the job. (In that particular year, Short Cuts<\/em> was then the Associate Editor of the school publication, RPC Collegian, with Erico B. Aumentado as the Editor-In-Chief. It was also in that specific year that one of Short Cuts\u2019<\/em> best friends, Erico B.Aumentado joined the staff of the weekly newspaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For reasons only known to Him, Short Cuts<\/em> chose to remain as a working student of the college.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier in that school year, however, Short Cuts<\/em> tried his political journey even as a student. True, indeed, he was also elected Senator of the Junior Republic of the college. In that same year, he was elected Senate President of the student \u2013 senators. A year later, Short Cuts<\/em> was elected Vice-President of the student government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, now in Short Cuts\u2019<\/em> love-life . . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was in the ending month of the first semester of Short Cuts\u2019<\/em> second year college work when his love-life began. It was filled with thrills. His ups and downs were easily identified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a poor boy from Barangay Cansibao of LGU Valencia, he had to choose an equally poor lady. But she must be with brains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the easily identified \u201cups\u201d, Short Cuts<\/em> easily got the former lady from Bilar, Bohol – the late Lilia Ancog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the \u201cdowns\u201d identified in the relationship?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDionisio, (referring to Short Cuts<\/em>) makapaka-on ba ka ni Lilia kon ma-asawa nimo siya?\u201d\u00a0 were the words \u201cthe DOWNS\u201d uttered by Short Cuts\u2019<\/em> and Lilia\u2019s former boss in the Office of the Registrar of the college they were working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silence was Short Cuts<\/em> only answer to the very sarcastic and humiliating query addressed to him.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following Sunday after the incident, Short Cuts<\/em> was terribly surprised while at home at Cansibao, Valencia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lilia\u2019s and Short Cuts\u2019 boss unexpectedly visited Short Cuts\u2019 barangay residence!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did she ever enter the poor household?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With wide and scrutinizing eyes, she went around the household. She investigated every nook and corner of\u00a0 Short Cuts\u2019<\/em> poor barangay household.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe discouraged of what she had seen, she left the residence without even saying, \u201cSalamat ug mo-uli na ko\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the odds and the DOWNS, Short Cuts<\/em> married Lilia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two years later, however, Short Cuts<\/em> had to visit his former boss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short Cuts<\/em> had to deliver to her former boss a sack of milled rice!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, her reaction to the milled rice?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She just smiled and said, \u201cThank you, Dionisio.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, the worst \u2018\u201dDOWNS\u201d<\/em> that Short Cuts<\/em> experienced in his lifetime happened in the Summer Term of 1962.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was in one of the late afternoons of May, 1962 . . . . <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short Cuts<\/em> was alone in the office when the Director of the College  hastily entered the Office of the Registrar and said: \u201cDionisio, asa ang imong amo?\u201d  Surprised by the sudden entry of the Director, Short Cuts<\/em> had this to say: Wala siya mo-report karon, Sir\u201d   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cHala tapoka ang tanang records ining oipisinaha unya palit ug gasolina dayon sunoga ang tanang mga papeles APIL KA\u201d, shouted the School Director.               <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Short<\/em> Cuts<\/em> had only to look down in silence. He was offensively touched to hear the words. There was no previous incident that could justify such event to happen. It was so sudden that caused Short Cuts\u2019<\/em> initial posture to stop schooling.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cI have to stop\u201d, silently screamed Short Cuts.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            As a poor boy, however, Short Cuts<\/em> had to change his mind after the storm. He was silently convinced \u201cnga magpaubos ra laman ta\u201d otherwise Short Cuts\u2019 dream to become a lawyer will never happen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, the incident narrated in the immediately preceding paragraphs were, however, rewarded years later. The \u201cDOWNS\u201d suddenly turned \u201cUPS\u201d in Short Cuts\u2019 life.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In what way?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, this is the story . . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short Cuts<\/em> was already in the sophomore class in the College of Law in the same institution. After experiencing so many unwarranted and uncalled for reprimands from her boss despite honest and scholarly performance in the office, Short Cuts<\/em> had to tender his resignation to the School Director.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a matter of coincidence that Short Cuts<\/em> received in the same period an offer to become the registrar of a newly-organized college in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe surprised by the resignation letter, the School Director requested for Short Cuts\u2019<\/em> appearance in his office a week after the resignation letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDionisio, balik sa atong eskwelahan\u201d, was the first statement uttered by the School Director when Short Cuts<\/em> appeared before him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short Cuts<\/em> was speechless to hear the words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minutes later, Short Cuts<\/em> had to explain. Kon mobalik ko Sir, asa man ko nimo ibutang nga dili na man ko gusto sa Registrar\u2019s Office kay dili na man ko gusto nga\u00a0 ma under pa sa maong registrar?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIkaw ang mahimong registrar\u201d, was the School Director\u2019s quick answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dUnya ang incumbent nga registrar, Sir asa na man siya ibutang\u201d, was Short Cuts\u2019<\/em> reminder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHimoon ko siyang School Principal sa Elementary Departmet\u201d, was the
School Director\u2019s quick response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cApan unsaon man nako pagbalik, Sir nga naka report na man ko sa laing eskwelahan so-ud sa usa ka semana?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For about ten minutes, the School Director remained silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After he regained composure, the School Director<\/em> had this to say: \u201cSigue, padayon na lamang sa bag-o nimong trabaho. Apan kon dili na kamo magkasinabot sa imong bag-ong amo, balik diri sa atong eskwelahan\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, we parted ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
