WITH COMMON SENSE. <\/strong>While people correlate match and science as hard subjects, all it takes is common sense to think it through, says DOST PSTC head Vina Antopina, while announcing the opening of the online application for the 2023 DOST Scholarship, during the opening of Piskay ni Bai, a new online talk show at PIA Bohol.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

CORTES, Bohol, Oct 8 (PIA) \u2013For Boholano youth who are primed for the thrill and challenge, how about testing the breadth of your mental ability by taking science and technology courses that would get you in the captain\u2019s seat in steering the country\u2019s future?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This fairly echoes the challenge that the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through the Provincial Science and Technology Center chief Vina Antopina, over at PIA Bohol\u2019s new talk show \u201cPiskay ni Bai.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antopina, along with Bohol PSTC\u2019s DOST Scholarship coordinator Noemi Olaer, came to announce the opening of the state scholarship which allows all Grade 12 senior high schools taking the Science,  Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) strand, all graduating senior high school students from Tagbilaran City Science High School and Ubay Science High School and senior high school graduating students who belong to the top five of the school\u2019s non STEM strand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DOST Scholarship, the country\u2019s most prestigious scholarship provided by law, prioritizes science and technology, engineering, mathematics and applied sciences that the government forecasts to be in demand by the time they graduate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time they graduate, their courses would be needed in their respective industries, this way we can avert the surplus of graduates who would again end up being forced to take jobs that do not match their skills and competencies, explains Olaer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On this, the DOST prioritizes courses that build and help sustain the industries, where new courses on top of the scholarship list are those that would elevate the country\u2018s development to new heights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Always think hard of the courses that in the future, can not simply be replaced by artificial intelligence, Antopina suggests to those up for the challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was talking of courses like Petroleum Engineering; in view of the country\u2019s direction to develop its oil and natural gas reserves, Ceramics Engineering; which goes into the rather diverse world of ceramics in medical applications like bone marrow transplants, applied physics, biotechnology, chemistry into nanotechnology, industrial pharmacy in preparation for the country\u2019s bold step into the pharmaceutical industry, medical technology that goes into microbiology in the direction of the country\u2019s establishment of a vaccine institute and tropical disease research, aeronautics that delves not just on becoming pilots but on repair and maintenance of aircrafts and other industry niches and the diverse world of space engineering.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What we are looking for are not necessarily the brightest, but rather the smart, who will have more of the emotional quotient to have the patience to persevere, Antopina advanced the information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And since these courses are not readily available in Bohol schools, interested students need to apply early as the schools may not have enough slots for the scholars as they too have their enrollees, DOST said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can not just simply allow them to enroll in ordinary schools, while it is the government which spends for their studies, we have to put them in the best schools known as centers of excellence for their opted courses, Antopina assured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is in it for the scholars: P7K monthly living allowance, P40K tuition and other school fees per academic year, P10K annual book allowance, P1K clothing allowance for those entering first year on their first year, P10K thesis allowance, group health insurance, economy class roundtrip ticket, summer allowance if the curriculum requires for it and another P1K graduation clothing allowance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DOST, which has opened the applications since September, said applicants can go to DOST Bohol PSTC Facebook Page where the online application can be processed, or send a private message to the page for detailed guide on the application process and submission of requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deadline for applications is December 2, according to the DOST.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
