The Gospel of Friday of the 32nd<\/sup> Week in Ordinary Time (Luke 17:26-37) offers a sober but reassuring reminder that Christ will return suddenly and unexpectedly. He points to the days of Noah and Lot, when people were occupied with eating, drinking, marrying, buying, selling, planting, and building. These were ordinary activities, yet many became so absorbed in them that they failed to notice God’s call until judgment came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem was not that they worked or enjoyed life’s blessings. It was that they lived as though this world were all that mattered. Their hearts became comfortable with routine, leaving little room for God. They ignored his invitations until it was too late to respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That warning remains timely today. Most of us are not led away by spectacular sins but by quiet complacency. We become busy with work, family, finances, and countless distractions. Prayer is postponed, charity grows weak, and thoughts of eternity slowly fade from view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Complacency is dangerous because it often appears harmless. We assume there will always be another day to forgive, to begin again, or to grow closer to God. Yet neither the length of our life nor the moment of Christ’s return is ours to determine. Wisdom lies in being ready today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lord does not ask us to live in fear but in faithful readiness. Readiness means remaining in God’s friendship through ordinary life. Every task, no matter how small, can become an act of love when offered to him. A soul that walks daily with God has nothing to fear when he comes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus strengthens this lesson by saying, “Remember Lot’s wife.” She left the city with her feet but not with her heart. Looking back revealed an attachment to what God had asked her to leave behind. Her example warns us against clinging to anything that keeps us from following the Lord wholeheartedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lord also says, “Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will save it.” This is not a call to despise life but to surrender it lovingly to God. The more tightly we cling to possessions, comfort, or status, the less free we become to love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christian detachment does not mean rejecting material things or neglecting responsibilities. Rather, it means using them wisely without allowing them to possess our hearts. Everything we have is a gift meant to lead us closer to God and to serve others generously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus then speaks of a striking separation. Two people may share the same bed or work side by side, yet one is taken and the other left. The message is clear: each person must answer God’s call personally. No relationship or outward appearance can replace a living faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This certainty of separation is not meant to frighten us but to awaken us. Every day is an opportunity to choose Christ again through prayer, honest work, kindness, forgiveness, and fidelity in ordinary duties. Holiness is formed in these quiet acts of love repeated day after day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lord’s return will come without warning, but it need not fill us with anxiety. If we strive to remain close to him, detached from passing things and rooted in what is eternal, his coming will be the joyful meeting we have long awaited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
