Within seconds, a solemn religious gathering turns into a scene of horror. The priest, identified as Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari of Guayaquil, Ecuador, dies after being struck by the falling structure. The congregation’s cries for help make the tragedy even more heartbreaking.

It is a painful reminder that accidents do not distinguish between sacred and ordinary spaces. And sometimes, the very structures we associate with faith, comfort, and protection can become instruments of danger when neglected.

Following the incident, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila (RCAM) issued Circular No. 2026-101 on November 3, directing churches, schools, and other church-run institutions to immediately inspect their facilities for potential safety hazards. The directive specifically identifies unstable crucifixes and religious statues, hanging fixtures such as chandeliers, lights, speakers and ceiling fans, electrical installations, and structural components including ceilings, walls, brackets and supporting anchors.

The instructions are sensible and necessary. Unsafe areas must immediately be restricted, repairs must be undertaken by qualified professionals, and inspection findings must be properly documented.

But here is the bigger question — Why should it take a death, a viral video, or a horrifying accident before institutions begin looking at what could go wrong?

Churches are among the most frequently visited public spaces in our communities. People come to pray, attend Mass, seek comfort, celebrate milestones, and find refuge during difficult moments. Schools, meanwhile, welcome children and young people whose safety is entrusted to administrators, teachers, and the institutions themselves.

Neither should be treated as spaces where safety is presumed simply because the people inside are engaged in something meaningful or sacred.

A beautiful church with centuries-old architecture may inspire reverence, but age also brings deterioration. A massive religious statue may symbolize devotion, but its weight demands proper structural support. A chandelier may enhance the beauty of a sanctuary, but a poorly secured fixture hanging above hundreds of worshippers is an accident waiting to happen.

The same principle applies to schools. Cracked ceilings, exposed electrical wiring, unstable shelves, poorly maintained stairways, obstructed emergency exits, and deteriorating classroom fixtures are not minor maintenance concerns. They are potential threats to lives.

This responsibility cannot rest on priests, school principals, or maintenance personnel alone. Church administrators, school governing boards, property managers, engineers, architects, and local government safety offices must work together to ensure that these facilities meet reasonable safety standards. Inspections should be scheduled, documented, and followed by actual corrective action, not merely conducted when public attention is drawn to an incident.

More importantly, safety must become a continuing institutional commitment rather than a reaction to tragedy.

Faith does not excuse negligence. Devotion does not replace engineering. And prayers, however sincere, should never be used as a substitute for preventive maintenance.

There is nothing irreverent about questioning whether a crucifix is securely mounted or whether a church ceiling can withstand the weight of its fixtures. There is nothing disrespectful about demanding that schools provide classrooms that will not endanger the children inside them.

If anything, protecting human life is among the highest expressions of faith and responsibility.

A church should never become a place where someone goes to pray and never comes home. A school should never become a place where a child goes to learn and ends up in harm’s way.

Let us not wait for another falling crucifix, another collapsing ceiling, another electrical fire, or another grieving family before we take safety seriously.

The most meaningful act of prevention is not what we promise after a tragedy. It is what we have the courage and discipline to fix before one happens.

Because no one should have to die before an institution remembers that human lives are worth protecting.

THERE is something particularly disturbing about a Facebook video showing a priest celebrating Mass when, without warning, a massive crucifix behind him suddenly comes crashing down.
