John Paul Gascon reported on ongoing engineering interventions at the sinkhole along the national road in Taguihon, Baclayon.

According to Gascon, the DPWH has begun removing the existing pavement and will proceed with excavating loose soil, examining underlying soil layers, installing hand-laid rocks, and undertaking embankment, compaction, cement-treated base, and reinforced concrete pavement works.

The rehabilitation is expected to be completed within three weeks, with the intervention designed to address ground instability and provide a long-term solution while protecting motorists.

Barangay officials and tanods are assisting in traffic management around the affected section as rehabilitation continues.

Bohol Mineral Resources Regulatory Office (BMinRRO) Officer-in-Charge Engr. Ana Luisa Galicinao, meanwhile, emphasized the importance of proper geological assessments in identifying caves, sinkholes, and other potential hazards.

She also called for stronger inter-agency coordination in monitoring quarry operations and promoting responsible mineral resource management.

GEOCONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Complementing these safety interventions, the October 15 BIUGGp seminar-workshop highlighted the relationship between geological heritage conservation, disaster resilience, and sustainable community development.

Anchored on the theme “Geodiversity on Our Doorstep: From Earth Science to Geoheritage, Disaster Resilience, and Sustainable Development,” the gathering brought together government officials, scientists, academic institutions, geopark advocates, and community stakeholders.

Vice Governor Nicanor Besas, representing Governor Erico Aristotle Aumentado, emphasized the province’s responsibility to champion sustainability and responsible stewardship of natural resources as home to the country’s first UNESCO Global Geopark.

Besas underscored the need to deepen public understanding of how geological formations influence Bohol’s environment, culture, and communities, particularly the effects of geological changes and natural hazards on people’s lives.

He also called for collective action to protect geological heritage, conserve natural resources, and build communities that are more resilient to disasters, consistent with the province’s vision of becoming a regenerative island.

BIUGGp Management Office Program Manager Joanne Pinat stressed that the success of a geopark should not be measured solely by tourist arrivals or international recognition, but by the communities that sustain and benefit from it.

She emphasized that the landscapes shaped by the 2013 earthquake have become part of the lives, values, and identity of Boholanos, reinforcing the need for continued public education on geodiversity.

Deputy Executive Director Lindsay Barrientos of the UNESCO Philippine National Commission, representing Secretary-General Dr. Ivan Anthony Henares, likewise recognized the contributions of local leaders, communities, and the youth in sustaining the geopark’s international recognition.

Barrientos noted that geopark development can generate livelihood opportunities and promote education while encouraging communities to respect the power and dynamics of the natural environment.

SCIENCE-BASED APPROACH TO GEOLOGICAL HAZARDS

The seminar-workshop featured discussions connecting geological science, heritage conservation, community education, and disaster risk
