There is no such thing as spiritual Switzerland. That is the uncomfortable truth Christ drives home in Luke 11:15-26. Faced with the undeniable miracle of a possessed man being set free, some people refused to rejoice. Instead, they twisted the evidence, claiming that Jesus was casting out demons by the power of the prince of demons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus dismantles the accusation with calm but devastating logic. “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste.” If Satan is busy driving out Satan, then the devil has apparently decided to become his own worst enemy. Evil is destructive enough without becoming self-destructive. The accusation simply does not make sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is what happens when people refuse the truth. They eventually stop making sense, even to themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sin has a peculiar way of scrambling our reasoning. It promises freedom but produces slavery. It advertises happiness but leaves emptiness. It boasts of enlightenment while darkening the mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once we distance ourselves from God, contradictions begin to multiply. We defend what harms us. We ridicule what heals us. We celebrate what eventually wounds us. We become experts at rationalizing the irrational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem is not merely intellectual. It is moral and spiritual. A heart that does not want God eventually recruits the mind to justify its resistance. Reason, instead of searching for truth, becomes a lawyer hired to defend convenient falsehoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History provides endless examples. People cry for peace while promoting hatred. They demand honesty while excusing deception whenever it benefits them. They preach freedom while becoming prisoners of their passions. Remove God from the center, and the compass spins wildly. Contradictions become a way of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christ offers the only lasting remedy. “If it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.” The victory over evil is not won merely by clever arguments. It comes through God’s transforming grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gospel then presents another striking image. An unclean spirit leaves a person but later returns with seven others, finding the house swept and orderly but empty. The condition of that person becomes worse than before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lesson is unmistakable. It is not enough to get rid of evil. The soul must be filled with God. Empty spaces are dangerous spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many people struggle against bad habits but neglect to cultivate virtue. They abandon vice but never embrace prayer. They reject old sins but fail to deepen their friendship with Christ. If grace does not occupy the heart, something else eventually will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The great teachers of the spiritual life constantly reminded Christians that holiness is more than avoiding sin. It means allowing Christ to reign completely. The heart is not a warehouse for passing tenants. It is a sanctuary meant for God himself. When he dwells there, order replaces confusion, peace overcomes turmoil, and truth exposes every contradiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Church’s ancient wisdom likewise teaches that genuine holiness produces inner unity. The person who lives with God gradually becomes integrated. Thoughts, words, choices, and actions begin to point in the same direction because they are rooted in the One who is Truth itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The choice is unavoidable. Christ says, “Whoever is not with me is against me.” Neutrality is an illusion. We either gather with him or scatter. We either build our life around God or around ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only one path leads to genuine freedom and lasting coherence. Stay with Christ, and life gradually falls into its proper order. Walk away from him, and sooner or later even our finest arguments collapse under the weight of their own contradictions.
