WE live in an age when everyone has a microphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It sits in our pockets, lights up our faces, and waits patiently for our next opinion. A political issue breaks, a celebrity says something controversial, a government announcement is released, and within minutes, the comment sections are overflowing. Everybody has something to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem is that very few people seem to have time to listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social media has made public conversation faster, louder and more democratic. Anyone with a phone can participate. That is, in many ways, a wonderful thing. We no longer have to wait for a newspaper column, a television interview or a public forum to make ourselves heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But somewhere along the way, conversation became competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We don’t simply express an opinion anymore. We defend it. We package it into a post. We add a clever caption, a screenshot, perhaps a laughing emoji for emphasis. Then we wait for people to agree with us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when somebody doesn’t? We prepare our next response before we’ve even finished reading theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is where the trouble begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Listening has become almost an act of rebellion in an environment designed to reward immediacy. Social media favors the quick reaction, the sharp comeback, the outrage that can be condensed into a sentence. Nuance, unfortunately, does not travel as quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither does context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We read a headline and decide what happened. We see a thirty-second video and decide who is right. We encounter an opinion that contradicts ours and immediately decide something about the person who wrote it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We confuse hearing with listening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hearing is passive. Listening requires work. It asks us to temporarily put down our own certainty and consider the possibility that another person may have experienced the same situation differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That does not mean we must agree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A healthy democracy does not require everyone to think alike. It requires people to disagree without losing their capacity to recognize one another as human beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, the internet has made it remarkably easy to turn disagreement into personal warfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We call people names instead of answering their arguments. We ridicule questions instead of addressing them. We share information not because it is useful, but because it confirms what we already believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And sometimes, we don’t even want a conversation. We want an audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An audience applauds. A conversation challenges. An audience validates us. A conversation sometimes forces us to reconsider what we thought we knew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps this is the discipline we need to recover — the ability to pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before commenting, read. Before reacting, understand. Before assuming, ask. Before attacking, consider whether the person in front of us is actually our opponent\u2014or simply another human being trying to make sense of a complicated world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We cannot solve every disagreement. We cannot make everybody agree. And we certainly cannot make social media suddenly become a monastery of calm and reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But we can choose what kind of participant we become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can be another voice adding to the noise, or we can become one of the increasingly rare people who actually listens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because public conversation is not supposed to be a contest over who gets the last word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is supposed to be how a society figures out what to do next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And perhaps, in an age when everyone has an opinion, the most valuable thing we can offer is not another opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is our attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, the most intelligent response is simply to listen long enough to understand.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
