WE often hear people say — \u201cThe youth are the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It sounds inspiring. It looks good on posters, speeches, campaign slogans, and graduation ceremonies. But perhaps we have repeated it so many times that we have forgotten to ask a rather inconvenient question — \u201cWho says young people own the future?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, the young will inherit the world we are building today. They will live longer with the consequences of the decisions being made now. They have energy, fresh ideas, technological fluency, and an entire lifetime ahead of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But let us not make the mistake of assuming that having more years ahead automatically makes someone more entitled to shape what comes next. Because the future is not something we hand over like an inheritance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We build it together.<\/strong> <\/strong>And that includes senior citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is something deeply admirable about an older person who refuses to disappear simply because society has decided that a certain birthday should come with a rocking chair, a television remote, and instructions to \u201ctake it easy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some seniors have taken \u201cretirement\u201d to mean retiring from work. Others have taken it to mean retiring from caring. There is a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The senior citizen who continues attending community meetings, participating in civic activities, volunteering, mentoring younger people, advocating for better public services, or simply showing up when the community needs someone to show up is sending a powerful message:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c<\/strong>I may be getting older, but I am not done contributing.<\/strong>\u201d <\/strong>And perhaps that is something our increasingly age-conscious society needs to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have become fascinated with youth. We celebrate young entrepreneurs, young leaders, young influencers, young professionals and young achievers. And we should.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But sometimes, in our obsession with everything new, we treat experience as though it were obsolete. It isn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A senior citizen carries something that cannot be downloaded, Googled, generated by artificial intelligence, or learned from a ten-minute tutorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perspective.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They have seen communities change. They have watched policies succeed and fail. They have witnessed promises become accomplishments\u2014and promises remain promises. They have experienced economic difficulties, political transitions, social changes, personal losses and unexpected victories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They have lived through chapters that younger generations are only beginning to read. That doesn’t mean older people are always right. Far from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experience does not automatically make a person wise. Age is not a substitute for good judgment. Seniors, like everyone else, can make mistakes, resist change, or hold opinions that need challenging. But neither should age automatically disqualify someone from being heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A healthy community does not choose between the wisdom of age and the energy of youth. It needs both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Young people can ask, \u201cWhy have we always done it this way?\u201d Older people can answer, \u201cBecause we tried something similar before\u2014and here’s what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Young people can bring speed. Older people can bring perspective. Young people can imagine possibilities. Older people can help identify consequences. Put them together, and perhaps we get something much more valuable than either generation working alone. We get continuity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is why an active senior citizen involved in civic affairs is more than an inspiring personal story. It is a quiet challenge to the way we think about aging. Because growing older should not automatically mean becoming less relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person does not suddenly lose his or her capacity to care because the hair turns gray. Nor does the desire to make a difference expire with retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the real question is not, \u201cHow old are you?\u201d Perhaps it is, \u201cWhat are you still willing to do for the people around you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the future isn’t waiting exclusively for the young.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is being shaped today\u2014by parents, grandparents, workers, retirees, students, professionals, volunteers, community leaders and ordinary citizens who refuse to stop caring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young will certainly live in tomorrow. But seniors helped build the road that leads there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if they are still willing to walk that road with us, still willing to speak, serve, question, mentor and participate, perhaps we should make room for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because they are old. But because they are \u201cstill citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
