Lunchtime often gives us a welcome pause from the demands of the day. Between meetings, classes, or errands, it offers a few quiet moments to nourish not only the body but also the soul. The Gospel of Thursday of the 24th<\/sup> Week in Ordinary Time (Luke 9:7\u20139) invites us to ponder a question that remains the most important one we will ever face: Who is Jesus to us?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Herod was confused. Reports about Jesus had reached his ears. Some said Jesus was John the Baptist raised from the dead. Others claimed He was Elijah or one of the ancient prophets returned. Herod was intrigued and wanted to see Him, yet his curiosity never matured into genuine faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This distinction is worth reflecting on. Curiosity may bring us closer to Jesus, but only faith transforms our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We all know that Christ is not merely a historical figure or an extraordinary teacher. He is the living Son of God who continues to work in every ordinary moment of our lives. We should strive to develop a personal relationship with Him rather than simply collecting information about Him. This is a quest we have to pursue in our whole life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many people today, sad to say, resemble Herod. They know about Jesus through books, social media, or occasional church attendance. They admire His teachings and appreciate His moral example. Yet knowing facts about Christ is different from knowing Christ Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christian life is not merely an intellectual exercise. It is a daily encounter with the Lord who walks with us in our work, family life, joys, and struggles. We should be reminded that holiness is not reserved for extraordinary people. It is meant for everyone, precisely in the middle of ordinary duties and responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gospel also warns us against allowing worldly concerns to cloud our spiritual vision. Herod’s position, ambitions, and guilty conscience prevented him from recognizing the truth standing before him. Our own distractions\u2014career pressures, financial worries, endless digital noise, or personal ambitions\u2014can likewise make us spiritually shortsighted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lunchtime offers a simple opportunity to reconnect with God. Before returning to work, we can ask ourselves: Have I spoken to Jesus today? Have I invited Him into my decisions, conversations, and responsibilities? Even a brief prayer can refocus our hearts on what truly matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every circumstance can and should become an occasion for encountering Christ. Whether we are preparing reports, teaching students, caring for our families, or sharing a meal with colleagues, God is present. Ordinary work becomes holy when it is done with love, competence, and the desire to serve Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Herod wanted to see Jesus out of curiosity. We are invited to seek Him out of love. We encounter Him not only in prayer but also in Scripture, the sacraments, the Church, and the people around us. Every person we meet carries an opportunity to love Christ through acts of kindness, patience, forgiveness, and generosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we finish our meal today, let us carry one question back into the rest of our day: Who is Jesus for us? Is He simply someone I know about, or is He the Lord who guides every aspect of our lives? Is He alive in every moment of our lives?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May our answer not consist merely of words but of the way we work, serve, forgive, and love. Then, unlike Herod’s passing curiosity, our encounter with Christ will become the source of lasting joy, peace, and holiness. (Fr. Roy Cimagala)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
