THERE was a brief moment during President Bongbong Marcos’ State of the Nation Address that caught me by surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was not an announcement about the economy. Nor was it about education, healthcare, agriculture, or infrastructure. It was a passing reference to something far less expected\u2014a vision of the Philippines launching a rocket. I paused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because I found the idea laughable, but because I genuinely did not know that such an ambition existed. It was unfamiliar territory. I had not heard much about it before, and for a moment my curiosity was greater than my skepticism. I found myself wondering what prompted such a vision, how far it had progressed, and what place it might have in the country’s long-term aspirations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what truly surprised me came after the speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next day, social media had done what social media does best. The rocket had become the headline\u2014not in the newsrooms, but in the nation’s collective conversation. Memes multiplied. Sarcasm spread effortlessly. The idea was mocked before it was examined. For many, it was not a proposal worth understanding but a joke waiting to be told.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I found myself asking why. Why this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of all the matters raised in the SONA, why did this single image\u2014a rocket leaving Philippine soil\u2014capture so much attention? Perhaps the answer lies deeper than politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe we have become so accustomed to seeing ourselves as a developing nation that certain dreams immediately feel out of place. We have learned to measure our ambitions against our limitations rather than our possibilities. Somewhere along the way, we began believing that there are dreams reserved for wealthy nations and others that countries like ours should never dare entertain. Or perhaps the reaction had little to do with rockets at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps it reflected the growing habit of judging an idea by the person who speaks it rather than by its own merit. In today’s political climate, it has become increasingly difficult to separate proposals from personalities. Every statement is filtered through loyalty or opposition long before it is considered on its own terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That, I think, is unfortunate. Because history has an odd way of humbling certainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almost every remarkable achievement began as something that sounded unrealistic. Human flight was once dismissed as fantasy. Space exploration itself was once the province of dreamers and novelists. Even the technologies we now carry effortlessly in our pockets would have seemed implausible not too many generations ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, dreaming is not enough. Vision without planning is merely wishful thinking. A country cannot reach for the stars while ignoring the struggles on the ground. We cannot speak of scientific frontiers while children remain in overcrowded classrooms, hospitals lack essential resources, and many families continue to worry about their next meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those concerns are real. They deserve attention, urgency, and solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet I wonder if we sometimes create a false choice\u2014as though a nation must choose between solving today’s problems and imagining tomorrow’s possibilities. Mature societies do both. They address immediate needs while quietly laying the foundations for a future that may not be realized within a single administration or even a single generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps that is what struck me most. Not the mention of a rocket, but how quickly we laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laughter is healthy when it exposes folly. But it becomes revealing when it exposes our own assumptions. Sometimes what we ridicule says less about the idea before us than about the limits we have unconsciously placed upon ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether or not the Philippines will one day launch a rocket is almost beside the point. The more important question is whether we still believe this country is capable of imagining extraordinary things\u2014and whether we have the patience, discipline, and confidence to pursue them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every nation rises first in its imagination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
