Perfect lawns. Expensive cars tucked neatly into garages. The kind of homes that make passersby slow down for just a second and say, “Someday.”

We assume that behind those walls lives a family that has figured life out. But walls have never been reliable storytellers.

Some of the emptiest places in the world have very expensive addresses. And some of the fullest lives are lived in houses where the paint has begun to peel.

Living in Dumaguete has taught me that prosperity and fulfillment are not always neighbors.

On any given afternoon, I can sit along Rizal Boulevard and watch two very different worlds unfold. A fisherman fixing his nets. Students laughing over cheap coffee. Elderly couples walking without saying much because, after decades together, silence has become another language. Nearby, expensive SUVs glide past, windows rolled up, everyone inside staring at a screen.

It makes me wonder who is actually richer.

We have become remarkably good at building lives that look successful. We build bigger houses than we need. We collect titles that barely fit on business cards. We chase promotions, properties, followers, recognition—always believing the next achievement will finally quiet whatever is restless inside us. Sometimes it does.

Most of the time, it only keeps us busy enough not to notice the silence.

I have met people who possess very little yet somehow leave every room warmer than they found it. I have also met people who possess almost everything and still carry an exhaustion that sleep cannot cure.

That kind of emptiness cannot be renovated. It cannot be landscaped. It cannot be covered by imported tiles or hidden behind beautifully designed interiors. It follows you from room to room.

Perhaps that is why some mansions feel strangely quiet, even during family gatherings. Everyone has their own room. Everyone has their own device. Everyone has their own schedule.

But no one really knows what another is carrying.

The house is full. The home is not. The irony is that many of the things that make life meaningful require very little money.

A conversation that isn’t interrupted by notifications. Dinner where nobody is in a hurry to leave. A child who still runs to the door when a parent comes home. Friends who know your failures and stay anyway. A morning when you wake up grateful instead of merely occupied. These things don’t increase your net worth.

But they enrich your life. That is something Dumaguete still reminds me of.

For all the changes our city continues to experience—for all the new buildings rising and businesses opening—it still offers moments that cannot be bought.

The sea doesn’t care what you drive. The Boulevard welcomes everyone equally. The sunrise arrives whether your bank account is full or empty. And perhaps that is the quiet wisdom of this city. It has never measured people by the size of their homes but by the way they greet each other on the street, by the conversations shared over coffee, by the willingness to show up when someone needs help.

Maybe fulfillment has always been hiding in ordinary places. Maybe we’ve simply been looking in expensive ones.

There is nothing wrong with wanting a comfortable life. There is dignity in working hard, in building something for your family, in dreaming beyond your present circumstances.

But somewhere along the way, we have confused having more with becoming more. They are not the same.

One day, every house we build will belong to someone else. The walls will be repainted. The furniture replaced. Our names will eventually disappear from the mailbox.

What will remain are the lives we touched, the love we gave, the moments we were fully present, and the people who felt less alone because we existed.

Those are the rooms that never become empty.

Those are the mansions worth building.

EVERY now and then, I find myself wondering about the houses we admire from the outside.
