It leaves behind more than victims. It leaves behind questions that refuse to go away.

The tragic school shooting in Tacloban, allegedly involving minors, is one of those moments that forces us to stop arguing long enough to reflect. Before we rush to assign blame, we must first ask ourselves an uncomfortable question: What kind of world are we handing to our children?

It is easy to point fingers. It is much harder to look in the mirror.

Parents cannot escape the conversation. Raising a child has never been limited to putting food on the table or paying school fees. Children need something more valuable than material provision—they need our presence. They need parents who know their friends, understand their fears, recognize changes in their behavior, and make time to listen even when life becomes busy. Sometimes, the warning signs are not loud. They are found in silence, isolation, anger, or a slow withdrawal from the people who love them most.

Schools also carry a profound responsibility. A diploma may open doors, but character determines which ones remain open. Education must produce more than high grades and employable graduates. It must nurture compassion, self-control, respect, and the ability to resolve conflict without violence. If schools become places where academic achievement overshadows moral formation, then we are preparing brilliant minds without strengthening the hearts that guide them.

And then there is social media—the constant companion of today’s youth. It informs, entertains, and connects. But it also exposes young minds to a relentless stream of violence, hatred, humiliation, and outrage. When brutality is viewed repeatedly, it risks becoming ordinary. When cruelty earns attention and clicks, empathy can slowly fade. Social media may not create violence by itself, but it can shape the environment in which violence becomes easier to imagine and, for some, easier to commit.

This tragedy also brings renewed scrutiny to our juvenile justice system. The law rightly recognizes that children are different from adults and that many deserve the chance to rebuild their lives through rehabilitation. That compassion reflects the best of our humanity. But compassion should never mean the absence of accountability. When innocent lives are taken, justice must also speak—not out of vengeance, but out of respect for the victims and for the rule of law.

The challenge before us is not choosing between mercy and justice. A mature society is capable of offering both. It can believe that a young offender is capable of change while also affirming that victims deserve justice that is real, fair, and meaningful.

There will be endless debates over who failed these children—parents, schools, social media, government, or society itself. The truth is that no single institution raises a child, and no single institution bears all the blame when one goes astray. We are all part of the environment that shapes the next generation.

Perhaps the greatest tragedy would be if this heartbreaking incident becomes just another headline that fades with the next news cycle. It should instead become a wake-up call. Every child who grows up feeling unseen, unheard, unloved, or unguided is a reminder that prevention begins long before the police, the courts, or the prisons become involved.

The future of our nation will not be determined solely by the laws we pass, but by the children we raise today.

As the Bible wisely reminds us, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6)

THERE is something especially heartbreaking about a crime committed by a child.
