Though our stay was short, every moment was filled with discovery, beauty, and excitement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We departed from Auckland Domestic Airport on April 29, 2025, at 10:30 AM and arrived in Queenstown after a smooth 1 hour and 55-minute flight. As soon as we landed, the crisp air greeted us\u20146\u00b0C during the day, dropping to a chilly 4\u00b0C in the evening. It was a refreshing change from the usual warmth we&#8217;re used to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Jewel in the South Island<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nestled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by the majestic Southern Alps, Queenstown is a feast for the senses. It\u2019s not just a paradise for thrill-seekers\u2014with activities like bungee jumping from Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge and jet-boating through the Shotover and Dart rivers\u2014it\u2019s also a gateway to scenic vineyards, historic gold rush towns, and tranquil lakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the best ways to appreciate Queenstown&#8217;s dramatic landscape is from above. Tourists can experience skydiving or ziplining, both offering breathtaking panoramic views of the mountains and forests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Our Memorable Experiences<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During our stay, we immersed ourselves in Queenstown\u2019s natural beauty and vibrant energy. Some of our most cherished experiences included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Watching Jet Boating on the Shotover River<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exploring the Queenstown Botanical Gardens, a serene escape amid nature<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Witnessing the iconic TSS Earnslaw Steamship as it cruised along Lake Wakatipu\u2014an authentic coal-powered vessel and a living piece of New Zealand\u2019s gold rush history<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Observing skydivers taking the plunge from dizzying heights<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Watching zipliners glide through the treetops with Lake Wakatipu in the background<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Queenstown\u2019s charm lies not just in its adrenaline-pumping adventures, but also in its walkable streets and clean, modern infrastructure. With most amenities being digital and self-service, the city feels both efficient and eco-conscious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Driving around the area, we were in awe of the pristine lakes\u2014Wakatipu, W\u0101naka, and H\u0101wea\u2014all offering different activities and breathtaking views. We even made a quick stop at Kining Queensland, a mountain standing 330 meters (1,080 feet) tall, offering picturesque vantage points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Bustling Tourist Destination<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a land area of 86.61 km\u00b2 and an urban population of around 28,600 (as of June 2024), Queenstown is classified as a medium-sized urban area. However, it punches well above its weight in tourist numbers. In 2023 alone, over 368,000 international visitors arrived at Queenstown Airport\u2014a 13.6% increase from 2019, showing just how popular this destination has become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visitors come from all over the world, making Queenstown a vibrant, multicultural hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Cost of Paradise<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Queenstown\u2019s popularity does come at a price\u2014literally. The demand for lodging, food, and activities, especially during ski season and summer, makes it one of the more expensive places in New Zealand. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parking fees can be steep\u2014my son Dean paid NZD 30 (about PHP 1,000) for just a few hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Food prices are also high\u2014a simple hamburger can cost up to NZD 20 (PHP 660).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town\u2019s high cost of living stems from its remote location, booming tourism industry, and New Zealand\u2019s relatively strong economy. Even locals feel the pinch, with higher rental and grocery prices compared to other regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, this economic boost also benefits the local workforce and infrastructure development. In a way, the elevated prices are part of the trade-off that comes with progress and global attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Final Reflections<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the expenses, Queenstown offered us more than just a vacation\u2014it gave us a renewed appreciation for nature, adventure, and human creativity. Each day brought something new: a breathtaking view, a flavorful meal, or a simple walk that turned into a moment of reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clean, green, and alive with energy, Queenstown truly lives up to its reputation.
