SOLIDUM<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"\">SECRETARY Renato Solidum of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) bats for education as means to help protect and preserve the Chocolate Hills amid the fiasco over the degradation of the said hills in Bohol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Solidum, who, as a geologist, explained to the press briefing yesterday in Tagbilaran City how the hills were formed, was fielding questions from the media here, like, how can the science and technology help in the protection and conservation of the hills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">He said that tour guides must be educated in science. \u201cKailangan ang tour guide is able to explain scientifically. And they can be paid more,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Education and preservation of the environment are among the entry points in this aspect. Others are health and nutrition, disaster risk reduction and livelihood that science and technology may provide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cSo, for me, explaining to people what this is all about is not simply you can make them anywhere, you have to value that and you should not disturb its pristine beauty of the formation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">While it is also important to offer livelihood as part of its program component in community empowerment thru science and technology, degradation of the environment, like the Chocolate Hills reduces the value of geology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThat\u2019s why disturbing the beauty by putting something there would diminish the value of wonders of geology, or if you believe in God, how God form that way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But the people need livelihood. He suggested, \u201cYou can provide them livelihood as alternative or develop swimming pool for eco-tourism business or put some products.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Meanwhile, DOST launched the Central Visayas Regional Science and Technology Innovation Week to celebrate science and tech after six years, with the theme: \u201cScience, Technology and Innovation: Providing Solutions, Opening Opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The event organized mainly by Bohol S &amp; T office led by provincial director Ms. Vina Antopina was graced during its opening by agency\u2019s honchos and Usec. For regional operations Dr. Sancho Mabborang, S&amp;T Information Institute director Dr. Richard Burgos, aside from Solidum, DOST regional director Jess Zamora and other DOST bigwigs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There were also guests from local government units, like Tagbilaran City Jane Cajes-Yap, who welcome the visitors, Governor Aris Aumentado, Pres. Carlos P. Garcia and incumbent president, League of Municipalities of the Phils. Bohol chapter Mayor Fernando Estavilla, Candijay Mayor Thamar Olaivar, Inabanga town Mayor Jono Jumamoy, Loay Mayor Atty. Lahar Ayuban, Dimiao Mayor Ralph Ang, San Miguel Mayor Ian Gil Mendez, Buenavista Mayor Atty. Dave Duallo, DILG regional director Leocadia Trovela, DILG provincial director Jerome Gonzales and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">DOST said it hopes to address the different problems thru the innovative solutions for scientists and researchers with the exhibits showcasing novelties held at the Island City Mall in this city.
